Connectionist Models of Reading: Incorporating Semantics

چکیده

There now exist direct route connectionist models of reading aloud (i.e. text to phoneme conversion) that learn to perform on their training data and unseen words with accuracy comparable to that of humans. They also exhibit a number of developmental, reaction time and brain damage effects that are observed experimentally. However, various deficiencies (such as their failure to perform accurate lexical decision and to show the pseudohomophone effect) indicate the need to incorporate some form of lexical/semantic system into these models. In this paper we present a preliminary investigation of this problem. A general framework is outlined that models network activation flow between orthography, phonology and semantics. Explicit small scale connectionist simulations show how such an approach can account for many aspects of reading (and related tasks) that are not possible without the influence of the semantic system. Further possible refinements of this approach are discussed.

Semantic Processing and the Development of Word-Recognition Skills: Evidence from Children with Reading Comprehension Difficulties

Children with specific reading comprehension difficulties were compared with control children on tests of language skill. The two groups performed at a similar level on tests requiring predominantly phonological skills, but the poor comprehenders performed less well on tests tapping semantic ability. Although the two groups were matched for decoding ability (as assessed by nonword reading), the...

Connectionist Models of Word Reading

Connectionist models of word reading attempt to explain the computational mechanisms underlying this important skill. The goal of this research is an integrated theory of reading and its brain bases, with the computational model as the interface between the two. The models are governed by computational principles that differ considerably from naive intuitions but nonetheless account for many as...

Predictors of nonword reading and dyslexia/ 1 PREDICTORS OF NONWORD READING AND DYSLEXIA Predictors of Exception Word and Nonword Reading in Dyslexic Children: The Severity Hypothesis

The classification of dyslexic children into discrete subtypes yields a poor description of the dyslexic population at large. Multiple regression methods were used to examine continuous variation in component reading subskills (nonword and exception word reading) and their underlying cognitive skills within a group of 59 9-15 year-old dyslexic children. Two measures of phonological skills contr...
